The International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM) Canadian Section is thrilled to announce that two of our submitted works have been selected for inclusion at the 2025 World New Music Days in Portugal: Chris Sivak’s Alouette Meets Her Maker has been selected in the children’s choir category, and Roxanne Turcotte’s Masques et dichotomies has been selected in the electroacoustic music category.

In addition, six more Canadian works were selected for inclusion at the festival:

Alfredo Santa Ana’s The River of Hellos and Goodbyes (submitted by Music on Main)

Emily Doolittle’s Gannetry (individual submission)

Gilles Gobeil’s Un cercle hors de l’arbre (individual submission)

Jim O’Leary’s Susan Pennefather Gray (individual submission)

Bekah Simms’ spore wind ii: swamp thing (individual submission)

Barry Truax’s What The Waters Told Me (individual submission)

“The ISCM Canadian Section is extremely pleased that the international jury has chosen two works from the section for presentation in Portugal: Chris Sivak’s Alouette Meets Her Maker and Roxanne Turcotte’s Masques et dichotomies have been chosen to represent Canada on the international stage in Porto and Lisbon. The works were praised by this year’s Canadian Section jury, described as  “excellent” and “very creative” (Sivak) and “striking” and “compelling” (Turcotte.)

The Canadian Section also extends its congratulations to the six other Canadian composers whose works have been selected by the international jury. Altogether, Canadian works represent a whopping 11% of pieces presented at the 2025 World New Music Day: a testament to the quality of our artists working in music and sound.”

Congratulations to Chris, Roxanne, Alfredo, Emily, Gilles, Jim, Bekah, and Barry!
