The International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM) Canadian Section is pleased to announce the six works that will comprise our submission to the 2024 World New Music Days in Tórshavn, Faroe Islands. The festival will take place from June 22 – June 30, 2024.
The selected works are:
Lysis (2022) for string quartet, by Amy Brandon
Don’t Say A Word (2022) for Flute, Tenor Saxophone, Cello, Piano, by Heather Hindman
ὀμφᾰλός (omphalós) (2019) for solo piano, by Jessie Plessis
Severed; Conjoined (2023) for Cello, Contrabass, and LiveTransducer System, by Michele Selvaggi
Le Désert mauve (Angela Parkins) (2021) for solo piano, by Nour Symon
Odd Couples (2022), (online composition/sound installation), by Gordon Williamson
Selected from nearly seventy submissions, these works span five out of the eighteen categories laid out by this year’s festival organisers. The pieces were chosen by a jury composed of Isabelle Bozzini, Farangis Nurulla-Khoja, and Gordon Fitzell. The jury was chaired by Bekah Simms, Vice-President of the ISCM Canadian Section, facilitated by Rodney Sharman, President of the Canadian Section, and August Murphy-King, General Manager of the Canadian League of Composers.
“The ISCM Canadian Section is proud to announce our selections for submission to the 2024 World New Music Days. The jury faced a difficult choice again this year, as the overall quality of works submitted remains very high. The pieces reflect the diversity of music creators and their approaches both in Canada and in Canadians working abroad, at least one of which will be heard on the world stage during Faroe Island’s first time hosting the festival. Congratulations to the selected composers!”
– Bekah Simms, Vice-President of the ISCM Canadian Section
