The ISCM Flemish Section (MATRIX New Music Centre) is launching a Call for Works. As part of their educational activities they are preparing an anthology of contemporary music for string instruments, suitable for young / amateur musicians. Each ISCM section has been invited to submit three works to this call.
- The primary focus is on solo works for violin, viola, cello or double bass, with or without piano accompaniment, but duos, trios, quartets and string ensemble pieces will be considered as well, as are compositions involving electronics;
- Relatively short works are preferred;
- Compositions should be fit for beginning/young musicians, ranging from beginner level to pre-conservatory level;
- Graphic scores are eligible as well;
- There is no strict limit as to the year of composition. In addition to recent works, somewhat older compositions may also be submitted.
Submissions should include:
- the score. Please make sure to include clear instructions wherever relevant, e.g. regarding any extended techniques or specific notation forms;
- a recording, if available;
- a short text outlining the strengths of the submitted piece in an educational context. Ideally, submitted works are accompanied by a recommendation from a music teacher or a testimonial from someone who has played the work. An example can be found here;
- A short biography of the composer, preferably with a link to the composers’ website.
The collection will be published at the start of the 2025-26 school year. A final selection will be made in consultation with a panel of music teachers. Agreements will be made with the composers of the selected works regarding the copyright to the score. MATRIX also provides a license fee.
You can submit the required materials to the ISCM Canadian Section through this form. Submissions are due by 11:59PM EST on Sunday, March 16 2025. Decisions regarding the submission will be made internally by Rodney Sharman (President, ISCM Canadian Section), and Bekah Simms (Vice-President, ISCM Canadian Section).
